Since it's large scale refurbishment the Greyhound Inn has become a much needed music venue for Belper regularly showcasing local talent in the form of groups and solo artists.
I went along to see such an act on Friday night and I wasn't disappointed.

A crowd in three figures turned out to see "just a lad that sings a little and plays guitar"- an understated tag line for James Capper.

The tall 20 year old student set
up his stool, wooden guitar and small amp and armed with a quick wit and strong set list consisting mainly his own songs punctuated by firm favourites from the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Hard Fi and the Libertines he set out to entertain the crowd for the following 90 minutes.

Starting with a self composed piece called The Rumour Mill, he set the tone for the night with an upbeat ballad betraying the musical influences of the noughties generation.

Similar songs were to follow and toes started to tap when the aptly named 'This Might Get on the Radio' started to play and were positively banging when the chart topper 'We Live and Die in these Towns' followed.

Following a short intermission more originals followed like the 'Dobber Song' with lyrics like: 'sing your heart out and sing it proud.'

Capper may be what this town has been waiting for- a talented solo artist who has a chance of hitting the music scene.

When 'Mardy Bum' followed the crowd joined in and this proved to be the pinnacle of the performance.

Then a revelation followed. James revealed: 'this will be my last gig……. ' Cue gasps of shock. But then he continued: '...with my old guitar, I'm getting a new one for Christmas!!'

With confidence to match his singing, song writing, and guitar playing skills the sky really could be the limit for this artist.

James Capper's next gig is on Saturday December 29 at the White Swan in Belper.
