Scheme records what gardens mean to Belper

WHAT do the River Gardens mean to you? That’s the question the Friends of Belper’s River Gardens are asking at a special free event to launch a new project.

At 7pm on Thursday, November 29 a presentation by World Heritage Site Co-ordinator Adrian Farmer and an exhibition about the history and recent developments in the Gardens will take place at the Strutt’s Centre on Derby Road, Belper.

Adrian and other members of the Friends group are hoping that the presentation will spark people’s memories of happy days spent in the gardens, which can be captured for their project.

Research is also planned to help explain why the gardens are important to the story of the Derwent Valley Mills WorldHeritage Site.

Chairman of the Friends Group, Trevor Griffin, said: “We’d like to hear what people like about the River Gardens; their memories – no matter how recent – of good times spent there or what role they played in your childhood or later life. Do you remember the Swiss Tea Rooms in action – the boating, events, or even the monkey cages?”

If this first event is successful, the group is considering putting in a bid for lottery funding tohelp them find and compile memories, and then publish them either in paper or digital form.

If you aren’t able to attend the event but would like your memories or thoughts recorded, contact the Friends Group on 01773 821920.
