Memory Lane trip back into the past

Therapeutic sessions involving portable reminiscence rooms for older people experiencing memory loss, confusion and dementia start this week in Amber Valley.

Each two hour session focuses on a reminiscence activity which has been proven to help people experiencing the early stages of dementia or memory loss.

Portable reminiscence rooms called ‘RemPods’ are designed to connect clients with memories from days gone by.

The 1950s living room RemPod includes a vintage television and classic programmes to help recall memories of family and first homes, while the cinema screen RemPod will allow organisers to hold film afternoons that will evoke the fun of trips to the cinema.

Angela Foxhall, support service team leader at Futures Homescape, said: “Dementia can be a very isolating disease, and whilst awareness is increasing there are very few services available. We’re really excited to be able to work with Age UK in offering the Memory Lane initiative, which has been designed to provide a safe space where attendees can relax and reawaken memories to improve wellbeing.”

The sessions also include structured activities, such as music, arts and crafts, games and refreshments. People attending do not need to have a formal diagnosis, and carers are welcome to attend to join in the main activities or take a break.

The sessions, will run for six months starting this week. and start at 1pm, on Thursday February 7 at Pevril Court Community Centre, Ripley, on Friday February 8 at Park Court Community Centre, Heanor, and Monday February 11 at Firs Gardens Community Centre, Alfreton. They will also run at Manor Farm Community Centre, Belper, and the The Orchard Community Centre, Horsley Woodhouse.

Each session costs £5 for an attendee and their carer. Single attendees cost £6. For future dates and times contact 01773 768240 or 01773 573100.
