Pool players Phil Marriott, 17, from Marlpool, and Arron Priest, 17, from Langley Mill, have qualified to try out for England on Saturday January 19.

Two promising young pool players have qualified for England’s youth team trials.

Phil Marriott, 17, from Marlpool, and Arron Priest, 17, from Langley Mill, played so well in Region 8, where they were pitted against the best young players from five other counties, that they have qualified to try out for England on Saturday ,January 19.

The pair, who play for Nottinghamshire, will face stiff competition from 62 under-18 opponents, picked from the cream of around 1,000 players who represented their counties, to win one of eight coveted spaces on the team.

Sarah Taylor, Nottinghamshire Pool Youth Team’s manager, said: “They pretty much win nearly every game but it takes a lot of practise - at least two or three hours a day after school and they also play in the Eastwood and District League and they’re constantly trying to improve.”

The duo practise at Phoenix Cue Sports in Eastwood, where Nottinghamshire county councillor Keith Longdon dropped in to congratulate them on their successes. He said: “We should be very proud of our local young people, as many are taking the great opportunities that are available to them. I think Arron and Phil’s achievements are just wonderful.”
