Madam,

I am writing to correct a statement made in the article "Mayor's knuckles rapped over conduct" (Belper News, June 10).
It states that councillors had signed "a letter from the Friends of Belper Parks".

The letter in question was prepared and sent by a person who was a member of the Friends group without it having been discussed at a committee meeting. It was headed 'Residents of Belper and Friends of Belper Parks'.

I was honorary secretary of the Friends of Belper Parks at the time, responsible both for the minutes of meetings and for sending out correspondence in the name of the group.

These facts were made known to the solicitors who investigated the issue on behalf of the borough council's standards committee.

The point of the article, was that the Mayor quite happily signed papers, that were not even read. What difference does it make who sent them.
