All of Belper’s a stage at short plays festival
Café’s, restaurants, shops, a bistro and even a bakery are to become temporary stages as part of the second Belper Short Plays Festival.
Organisers this week confirmed the line-up for the event in May, which forms an integral part of the wider Belper Arts Festival.
And a highlight of the Short Play Festival in 2012 – Café Saturday – is to return on May 18 with up to 20 plays and monologues performed in unusual venues across town.
All the events are to be free - with audiences encouraged to pay what they think the performance was worth after the show.
“Riot!” – Winner of the 2013 Belper Short Play Competition will also be performed on the closing day of the festival.
Organiser George Gunby said: “The Short Play Festival is about new writing. New writing is the lifeblood of theatre. Without new writing theatre becomes stale and predictable. New writing gives actors the opportunity to create new and exciting characters and directors the chance to have new visions. “And performance doesn’t have to be confined to a theatre. This year NUMBER 28 Community Hall on the Market Place will be home to many of the performances, along with pubs and cafes.
“Add to that the concept of Pay What You Think It’s Worth and new writing is accessible to anyone.”
On May 22 “Brel : A Cabaret” celebrates Belgian singer Jacques Brel in an evening of music, theatre, dance and movement atThe Old King’s Head, Days Lane, Belper.
The following day, four of the best short plays from 2012will be performed, including Ellie Ward performing “Masks” and “Nothing Personal,” an evening in the company of two assassins at Number 28 Community Hall, Market Place, Belper.
Four new plays from local writers, including Wirksworth’s Graham Sellors and George Gunby will be performed as part of “Local heroes”on May 24 at the same venue. And finally ‘Laugh on Saturday’ brings shows from Ripley Amateur Drama Group, a performance of “Lileth” – Written by Nichola O’Hare and “Riot!” at the community hall.
