Duffield’s own war horses

editorial image

As war broke out on the Western Front, horses were commandeered from farms, liveries, hunt stables and private ownership to serve on the front line.

Almost a million animals from the UK alone are estimated to have died during the conflict and it led to a dramatic decline in the amount of horses in rural areas.

Their plight inspired Hollywood director Steven Spielberg to direct the blockbuster War Horse recently.

This picture was taken in Duffield during the war and shows Army officers leading horses away from the village.
