History repeating itself at town’s fire damaged factories?

editorial image

There is a flavour of history repeating itself in this week’s Memory Lane.

On January 15, 1905, William Holden and Sons’ furniture factory and warehouse was completely destroyed by fire.

The site, at the bottom of Field Lane was later used for housing.

Today the town is still recovering from the after effects of the fire which consumed the former Thorntons building on Derwent Streetin May. There is speculation that this area too could now be used for housing.
