bargate rovers win junior cup: Bargate Rovers completed a successful season by thumping Morley Road 6-2 in the final of the Derby Welfare League Junior Cup. The club also finished in third place in the league, just two points behind the leaders. They also scored 110 goals in all league and cup games, with striker Tony Grace netting more than 70. It was a stark contrast to the previous season, when Bargate only won two games all year.

belper man is pilot officer: Adrian Clutterbuck, 27, was awarded a commission in the Royal Air Force as a Pilot Officer at a graduation ceremony held at the RAF College, in Cranwell, Lincolnshire. Adrian, whose parents lived on Derby Road, Belper, went to Long Row School and the Parks School, in Belper, before joining the Derbyshire Constabulary. He was to continue his professional training as a police officer in the Security Branch of the RAF.

floral delight: Six women from the Belper area created floral displays for Derby Cathedral. Avis Harrison created a display based on the founder of Belper’s mills, Jedediah Strutt. Jill Hawkins and Val Heathcote honoured Florence Nightingale, while Pauline Kinderman and Janet Hunt based their display on the works of Constance Spry. Janet Dicken’s display was inspired by singer Denny Dennis while a Bonny Prince Charlie display was made by Betty Shalmerdie.
