Kids in wellies

two milestones for belper town: Delight was mixed with disappointment as Belper Town FC recorded their 100th league goal of the season in a fixture at Kimberley Town. But The Nailers contrived to lose the game 2-1 — against a side that were considered to be their bogey team. Two weeks earlier, Belper beat Kimberley at home for the first time ever. During the 2-1 loss, Belper centre-forward Michael Lakin notched his 50th goal of the season.

April, 1981

Night of the fireworks: Bonfire beacons and firework rockets lit up the Belper evening sky when the town joined the nuclear disarmament demonstration, ‘March Across the Sky’. The event, held at the home of Pat Laughlin, of Westbury Gardens, Belper, was part of a send-off for disarmament walkers who were heading to Belgium. All across the UK and in some parts of Europe, beacons and rockets were fired in a “show of strength” against the use of nuclear weapons.

easter bonnets on parade: Nursery children from Long Row School held a special Easter Bonnet parade. The class of three and four-year-old youngsters had made a selection of Easter bonnets with help from their parents. To mark Easter, the children performed the song ‘Chick, Chick, Chick, Chick, Chicken’ at assembly in front of the whole school. Headteacher Margaret Cadman said: “They all looked lovely and their performance was wonderful.”
