Walkers are offered chance to see their names in print
Ramblers are being offered the chance to feature in a new book by an author in Milford.
Ashley Franklin is releasing “Walking in Circles Down The Derwent Valley - 19 brand new circular walks” in April.
To help him complete the work he is asking people in Belper to tell him why they love to walk.
The best comments will be chosen by Mr Franklin to feature in the book.
Mr Franklin said: “Give me a few lines that are interesting, wise, witty, or heart-warming, and your words will be included in my book.
“It’s a wonderful thrill seeing your book published, seeing it up there on the shelves or, better still, displayed in the window.
“This is an opportunity to share in that thrill, a chance to say: ‘I’m in that book.’ So, let’s hear from you.”
You can email Mr Franklin at info@ashleyfranklin.co.uk or send a letter to: 13 BankBuildings, Milford, Derbys DE56 0QJ.
The deadline for submissions is January 31.

April sees the publication of my book Derbyshire
Ramblings - Walking in Circles Down The Derwent
Valley - 19 brand new circular walks, devised by
renowned Walk Recorder Mike Warner, to celebrate
the tenth anniversary of the opening up of the Derwent Valley Heritage
Way.
This book’s playful title Derbyshire Ramblings - Walking in Circles Down
The Derwent Valley - is intended to show this is more than just a walks
guidebook. It’s light-hearted in tone, chock full of historical detail and
full of musings on the subject of walking itself.
In the course of compiling this book, I have has been gathering all the
well known quotes on the subject of walking - from Hazlitt to Hillaby,
Kierkegaard to Wainwright - and suddenly thought: ‘why not ask ordinary
walkers to tell me why they walk and include the best responses in the
book?’
In exercising the body, the question ‘why walk?’ has exercised the minds
of walkers across the world and over time. For me, as a walker who
enjoys walking without relishing it, I find it a fascinating question.
A Latin proverb states simply: ‘It is solved by walking,’ which the
philosopher Kierkegaard expanded on when he wrote: ‘Every day I walk
myself into a state of well being and walk away from every illness. I have
walked myself into my best thoughts and I know of no thought so burdensome
that one cannot walk away from it.’
As British historian and keen walker George Macaulay Trevelyan pointed
out: ‘I have two doctors, my left leg and my right leg.’ For Alfred Wainwright,
walking was many things, including ‘a balm for jangled nerves’ or ‘escape
from the clamour and tumult of everyday existence.’ For William Hazlitt, there
was the sheer exhilaration of walking: ‘Give me the clear blue sky over my
head, and the green turf beneath my feet, a winding road before me, and a three
hours’ march to dinner - and then to thinking!. It is hard if I cannot start some
game on these lone heaths. I laugh, I run, I leap, I sing for joy.’
So, why do YOU walk?’ Give me a few lines that are interesting, wise,
witty, or heart-warming, and your words will be included in my book.
You can write an essay if you wish, though one sentence might do it for
me - just as long as you can convey something of the joy, love, need
or benefits of walking, whether tackling a mountain or taking a riverside
stroll.
It’s a wonderful thrill seeing your book published, seeing it up there
on the shelves or, better still, displayed in the window. This is an
opportunity to share in that thrill, a chance to say: ‘I’m in that book.’ So,
let’s hear from you...
