meadows win after disastrous start: Belper Meadows cricket team recovered from losing an astonishing four wickets for less than ten runs at the start of the innings to beat Sandiacre by 40 runs. Meadows scored only 98, but the bowling of Bradbury – who took five wickets for the loss of only 17 runs – Aldwinkle and Ball skittled Sandiacre’s batsmen for a paltry 58.

death dive at kilburn: As part of planning Kilburn’s 1981 carnival, the committee heard from ‘Dante’ (real name Tony Evans), who promised to wow crowds with ‘Dante’s Death Dive’. The daredevil stunt would see ‘Dante’ leap from a 70ft high tower on to a sponge bag. As if that wasn’t enough, the sponge bag would be surrounded by spears. The act was the only one of its kind in Europe.

Cops take on drop inn at pool contest: Tension was high as kids from the Drop Inn, at Belper, took on local police officers in a pool tournament. Battling for the Belper Police Station Shield, the youngsters were installed as pre-match favourites. But the cops pulled off a surprise 8-6 victory. Inspector Arnie Hicklin said he was very proud of his officers’ win.
