ELDERLY patients in care homes with feeding or swallowing difficulties are to get help sooner thanks to a new £57,000 project.
Under the scheme, care home nurses will receive specialist training from Derbyshire Community Health Services’ speech and language therapists so that can identify and manage the condition better.
Initially therapists aim to recruit ten care homes in Amber Valley Derby City and South Derbyshire to pilot the project.
Nurses from each care home will be invited to attend a two-day training course.
The project will run until January, 2012. Nursing home patients can often develop chest problems, resulting in emergency hospital admissions.
