A CAMPAIGN group formed to oppose a Tesco supermarket being built in Belper is asking for feedback on what people would alternatively like to see the site used for.
As yet no planning application has been submitted but Tesco owns a large proportion of the land at Meadows Edge and Derwent Street.
Belper Against Tesco (BATs) was formed a year ago to build a case to fight any planning application that the supermarket giant submits.
Last week 150 people attended their third meeting which saw the results of a survey carried out in Matlock unveiled. A new Sainsbury's store opened there last year and the report revealed many shop owners in Matlock town centre felt their trade had been affected by the superstore opening.
Andy Minion, from BATS, said: "The opening of Sainsbury's and the new road has been a disaster for Matlock traders."
The group says there are similarities between the two schemes in that an unsightly part of Matlock in Cawdor Quarry was developed by a supermarket chain who built a relief road into their plans.
A development brief for the Meadows Edge area is currently being undertaken by planning authority Amber Valley Borough Council and at the meeting BATS' members were invited to submit ideas.
Mr Minion said: "BATs members and interested local residents are invited to send their submissions to the group for inclusion into a document that will form the BATs submission.
"We want to know what people do want to see the site used for, rather than what people don't want to see there."
Submissions can be sent through the feedback page of the groups website before Friday May 23. Visit
