A GRUELLING challenge lies ahead for Belper man Sam Jones, when he cycles thousands of miles across America this summer for charity.
Sam, 21, a former Belper School student, who is currently studying maths at university in Liverpool, will take on the 3,784-mile challenge with his university friends David Chapman and Hal Roberts.

The three aim to complete the journey in under six weeks, cycling 105 miles a day to raise money for children's cancer charity ClicSargent.

Sam, formerly of Long Row, said: "It came about because me and Hal wanted to do something in the summer after we graduate because we wouldn't see each other for a while, then we came up with the idea of cycling across America. I was then playing squash with Dave and asked him if he wanted to come along."

The friends are currently training in the gym, as well as heading out on bike rides, and have bought new touring bikes for the ride. They fly out to the States on July 24 and start their challenge in York Town, Virginia. They will then head along the 'TransAmerican Trail' taking tents with them, with the aim of sleeping in them two out of three nights.

Sam added: "I am most looking forward to seeing a lot of America, there is going to be some really good sights. Also, the satisfaction at the end having completed such a massive journey. It will be the end of our exams and the start of our freedom. I'm really looking forward to it."

The trio chose ClicSargent after they visited the charity's website and were moved by some of the stories of children battling cancer.

To help Sam and his team reach their £3,000 target go to http://www.justgiving.com/TransUSA.

Oh lovely, I want to go to Peru and hike the Inca Trail but I will save up rather than jumping on the back of a charity and using the money raised to fund the trip. They only mention the charity at the end of the article, it should be more important than that, come on lads sort it out.

Sam Jones,

Hi there, I am Sam, from the article.
In response to your comment, we are funding the trip out of our own pocket. We are paying for all of our flights, accomodation, food etc ourselves. ALL the money raised goes to CLIC Sargent.
We are not in any way "jumping on the back of a charity and using the money raised to fund the trip". If you'd bothered to check out the donations page, then you'd have known this.
It is not my fault that the charity only gets a brief mention at the end of the article. Again, check out our donations page or our blog: http://transusa2010.blogspot.com/ and you can read a lot more about the charity.
Thankyou, Sam.

Well done, Sam. Good response. I wish you all the best for your trip. Unfortunately it seems some people in this world are too cynical.

The charity is mentioned THREE times in the article. It also states in the introduction that the ride is for charity and there is a link to the fundraising page at the bottom.
It is a news article, not an advertisement for the charity concerned. Such trips are usually funded by the parties involved, as many people are aware.
Offended, I suggest you visit http://www.clicsargent.org.uk/Home for more information on the charity but feel free to visit our site again for local news.
