A Belper road could soon be one-way after a campaign by residents fed up with motorists using it as a cut through to the town centre from the A6.
A petition calling for Becksitch Lane to be closed to traffic from the A6 was signed by 134 people and handed to Derbyshire County Council last November.

This week the council said notices would shortly go out around the area to alert the public t
o the plans and gauge their opinion.

A spokesman said: "We listened to residents' views and have already carried out a preliminary consultation with emergency services, councils, and motoring organisations about making the road one-way for traffic travelling away from Holbrook Road."

Kevin Renshaw, who lives on the lane, asked Belper Town Council for help to pressurise the authority into setting up the restriction from the junction with Holbrook Road at its last meeting.

He said: "There's been an increase in traffic due to the gasworks on the A6 and more and more cars have been coming up Becksitch Lane to get away from it. It's going to keep happening and people are going to use
it more and more."

He told the council he had heard nothing since handing in the petition but the county council said it had been working behind the scenes and it was in hand.
