Milford and Makeney Well Dressing Group worked on the well designs every day last week to prepare for the procession, which was held on Saturday.

Milford Brass Band, Milford Morris Dancers and the Mills of the Maid were among the acts that helped to celebrate the day, which marked the tenth year of well dressings for the group.

The themes for this year's wells were 'green' and 'environmental'. One of the well dressings, made by Milford Playgroup was made using recycled materials, flower petals, cones and seeds. The main picture featured carbon footprints around the edge.

Rosemary Timms, one of the event's organisers, said: "I think it's very important that in the modern age we continue to keep alive some of our traditions. Our theme this year was relevant to modern day and highlighted something which is important to now and this generation.

It's not just about keeping the past alive, it's about showing what is important to us now in the twentieth century in a traditional way."

The tradition of well dressing is thought to have originated in Pagan times when it was used to give thanks for the water supply provided by wells in towns and villages.
