Belper could be set for another fast foot outlet if fried chicken restaurant KFC follows through on plans to move into the town.
The company announced this week that it was looking into opening up to 300 new restaurants across the UK in the next three years, and Belper was one of the locations being considered.

If a KFC was built, it would join McDonalds, Subway and Domino's Pizza franchises already in the town.

Possible premises for the new restaurant have not been revealed, but a spokesman for the company said it was looking at sites 'on the main shopping street or near a retail area.'

KFC's chief executive Martin Shuker said: "We are delighted to announce that we will be opening 200 to 300 new restaurants across the UK in the next three to five years, creating up to 9,000 new jobs.

"We can confirm that we are currently looking for suitable sites in Belper to open a restaurant which would create up to 30 full and part-time jobs in the local community."

There are currently around 3,000 KFC outlets in the UK.

Okay this story has been up and running for a day now so where are the anti KFC posters, facebook groups, banners, marches, riot police etc - I am totally disappointed. Does this mean that Belper likes KFC - isn't KFC going to provide unwanted competition for some already established business. Where's the environmental brigade - aren't we going to make KFC provide anti-litter patrols.
Come on folks lets have some action or are you all asleep.

OK, to keep Perdio happy, I'll start the ball rolling.

I, for one, do not want to see a branch of KFC in Belper as I think there is already a sufficient number of fast food outlets in the town. No doubt there will be a whinging percentage who will claim it's 'their right' or they 'need' to have a KFC here to which the simple answer is "no it isn't and no you don't". Too many people, and I include most of those who 'need' a large Tesco in Belper, cannot distinguish between 'need' and 'want': need requires necessity whilst want is merely a diluted form of greed.

I am sick and tired of walking around Belper and having to avoid empty McDonald's cartons, half-eaten kebabs, pizza boxes and such other detritus. Do we really want to add buckets of KFC to this list?

I dont know what people are whinging about. Belper has not been a quaint little market town for over 20 years now......if you want that go to Bakewell. I dont care if KFC comes to Belper, and I dont care if it does not. You just sound like one of those whinging leftys who moan about tesco, when the town clearly needs a bypass to improve the traffic flow.......Its called progress. We dont live in the dark ages anymore....Belper aint no show town!

Here's one for the pot then.....

Poor quality, no taste, poor condition etc etc blah blah blah. I could go on for hours but the more dodgy fast food chains around the more examples of what can be produced in a lab for human consumption there are. Follow this link and make up your own minds.

In response to the King Street Resident, I fail to see where you get the idea I suggested Belper was 'a quaint little market town' unless, of course, quaintness directly equates to not having to walk through the piles of discarded fast food containers that the great unwashed populace of the town are incapable of depositing in a rubbish bin.

FYI, Belper's bypass was built several years ago: it is called the A38 between Abbey Hill roundabout and the A610 roundabout. Unfortunately, what we don't have is a Highways Agency with the balls to implement this and take the heavy through traffic off the A6 at either Allestree or Ambergate.

Perdio moaned because nobody had commented on this story so I decided to throw in the first comment. Then what happens? You moan because someone HAS commented.

King Street Resident, you have made me smile both with your apathy towards a KFC in Belper and you are the first person ever to accuse me of sounding like a whinging Lefty.

Sorry Brassed off Belper, Normally on here we always see eye to eye on most matters!! But I am just fed up how this town has been left to rack and ruin by our most gracious and over paid council representatives!!

Belper has not got any traffic problems,

Belper 28/07/2009 13:51:34
I know this is going a bit off-topic, but I constantly read about the traffic problems in Belper - I very rarely experience any problems travelling through Belper, at various times of the day. I don't think a bypass is needed, seems a waste of time.

Brassed off - I think if you ever travelled down the A610 you would realise that the majority of heavy vehicles already use this 'bypass'.

Eating KFC always confuses me - some say that it's junk food like theirs that is making people fat, but on the occasion I trid it (a few years back now) I actually lost nearly a stone in weight in just two days. If you don't believe me then ask the staff at the DRI and my solicitor.
