A WOMAN affectionately known as the Denby Witch hosted a Black Magic party in the village this week – but it was chocolate on the menu rather than the dark arts.
Linda Christian was chosen by Nestle to host a relaunch party of its Black Magic chocolates brand at her home on Denby Common on Friday night after complaining to the company when it changed the packaging and flavour of her favourite confectionery.
Nestle relaunched its Black Magic chocolates in 2007 but the new white box and different flavours attracted more than 8,000 complaints.
In response to public demand, the company agreed to change back to the original black and red box and chocolates – and rewarded one of the people who wrote to them with a special launch party at their home.
Linda, 61, said: "If is ain't broke don't fix it – I wrote to them telling them this."
The company sent chocolates, balloons and other Black Magic-themed party items, and Linda hosted a buffet for friends and family.
She said: "It's a nice twist, me being known as the 'Denby witch'. I think it was the 'white witch gets into black magic' line that swung the competition for me."
"I'm affectionately known as the Denby witch. I used to tell the children in the village that so they didn't give me any trouble when they came round, then the boy across the road asked me to cast a spell to make sure England beat Argentina in the World Cup and he came running up the driveway when they did shouting 'it worked, it worked'."
A spokesman for Nestle said: "Black Magic has clearly listened to its loyal fan base and is returning with six of the best traditional flavours – all set to be firm favourites once again."
Linda is also into Reiki and healing and when she left her job, colleagues presented her with a broomstick.
