Despite the slightly wet weather in the morning, the annual event drew hundreds of people to enjoy the parade, stalls, entertainment, and community spirit of the carnival, which took place on Saturday, July 17.

Eric Lancashire, secretary of the Community Association, said he thought the event drew more people than ever before.

He added: "Thanks to the sponsors, for without their financial sponsorship, the carnival wouldn't happen. Thanks to all those involved in the refreshments, the stewards and helpers and those in the arduous task of taking the entrance fee, the money overseers, the parish organisations and those who attended and made it a successful day."

All manner of weird and wonderful creatures took part in the carnival parade, including a Chinese dragon made by the local Scout group and the two cheeky pirates on the front page – Charlotte Last and Charlie
McGuinness. There was also a wheelbarrow race, sheepdog displays, a marching bands competition, won by the Derby Midshipman and a scarecrow competition.

The winning entry was a pair of scarecrows called Mr and Mrs Dingle Dangle, made by Wendy Powderly. The competition was fiercely fought by entries including a Wayne Rooney-style scarecrow, a pirate, and a swimming-themed model.

Despite the success of the day, however, carnival organisers faced a problem with people sneaking through the gates without paying.

With the event costing around £5,000 to organise every penny counts.
