Exotic aromas filled the air on Sunday as dozens of stallholders plied their wares at the town's annual food festival.
Cheese, cupcakes, olives and pies were just a few of the foodstuffs on offer from more than 60 stalls, which took over the town centre.

Thousands of people milled around to take a look at what the Belper Town Council-organised festival had to off
er. Council staff said they thought it was the busiest the festival has been in its four year history.

A few downpours throughout the day did little to diminish the spirits of people in the town throughout the day. Town residents joined people travelling from further afield to enjoy the event.

Belper resident Sarah McMullen said: "I think the food festival is a brilliant combination of everything the community can achieve if it works together."

Several shops in the town centre broke with tradition and opened for the day on Sunday, including M & Co, Claire's Beautiful Beads, and Oxfam.

Local groups also provided entertainment for the day, Folk Friendzy and members of the Splitz Dance School performed in King Street, and several acoustic bands entertained crowds in the Memorial Gardens, which housed craft stalls for the first time in the festival's history.

To top off the excitement of the day the food festival enjoyed a star turn from former Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt.

The actor, who opened the festival, now runs the Saddleworth Cheese Company.

Well,at least the town was busy, but the food fair was a total rip off.
I bought a so-called Lancashire meat and potato pie which I cooked for the family. Even our dog went hungry. We could not find any meat. Will not support this event again.

I agree with Judith Anne regarding the Lancashire meat and potato pie. We bought two from the stall on the Memorial Gardens and, although there was something besides potato in them, I'm not sure what it was.

"i (sic) suspect is was one of the many cheese's that were off", says BelperDave. One of the many cheese's what?

Great event and a lot of effort gone into it. Just a note: Lancashire meat and potato pies are tradionally 90% potato. Good to have a real one for once, served with pickled red cabbage.

my 2 children have now been sent off to hospital regarding the cheese incident, and now the 3rd one is feeling abit drowsy. i am going to write a formal letter of complaint to the council over this event. It has obviously not had the right safety checks and hygiene checks that are appropriate.

Fair enough, Kev. If I'd known this beforehand I wouldn't have bought the pies. If something is advertised as 'meat and potato', I'd expect it to be at least 50% meat and 50% potato. Perhaps it should be renamed a Lancashire Potato Pie with a trace of Meat?

Belper Dave - and how do you know your children's sickness is from the cheese? I would gather the evidence before accusing Belper Town Council. And anyway, there is a rather nasty bug going around at the moment - i know of lots of people around Belper than have had it. It causes sickness and drowsiness but it is not food poisioning. I had it myself.

Oh dear Belper Dave, that doesn't sound good, you should really get in touch with the cheese makers first to find out if anyone else has come down with 'food poisoning', you never know it could have been something your kids ate before they went to the food fest! Imagine that....
