A touch of class

The 2009-2010 International Classical Concert Series at Derby's Assembly Rooms will feature the return of some old favourites.

Hall are always a draw with local crowds and will be at the venue on Saturday, September 19, conducted by Sir Mark Elder in performances of Elgar's In The South, Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 – with soloist Sergio Tiempo – and Sibelius's Fifth Symphony.

On October 8, you can see the return of the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, playing Mussorgsky's Prelude and Persian Dance, and a double dose of Tchaikovsky, the Piano Concerto No 1 – with soloist Barry Douglas – and the First Symphony, subtitled Winter Daydreams.

Conductor Jacek Kaspszyk leads the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra through Panufnik's Nocturne, Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1 – soloist Priya Mitchell – and Beethoven's Seventh Symphony on November 11.

The first concert of 2010 features the latest visit of Sinfonia Viva on January 27, conducted by Andre De Ridder, playing an as-yet-unnamed, specially commissioned, short orchestral work's premiere, plus Schumann's Violin Concerto and Brahms's Serenade No 1.

Later in the season, there will be concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

Halle round off the proceedings on May 16, 2010, with John Wilson conducting an evening of Spanish-influenced music, namely Chabrier's Espana, Falla's El Amor Brujo, a selection from Bizet's Carmen,

Rodrigo's Concierto De Aranjuez and Ravel's hypnotic Bolero.
