Arrest over spate of wheelie bin arson attacks in New Road

A 54-year-old man has been arrested in connection with alleged arson offence in Belper.

The local man was arrested close to a blaze involving wheelie bins in New Road, at 1.45am on Wednesday, October 1.

He was questioned by officers before being released pending further enquiries.

Police say they believe two fires were started deliberately in the road at 12.30am and 1.45am the same day and they are linking the alleged offences with similar suspected arson offences in the same locality over the past two weeks.

Other blazes in New Road have included one at 10.20pm on Tuesday, September 16 when firefighters found two wheelie bins on fire behind a row of properties. At around 11.15pm on Wednesday, September 17 five bins were set on fire.

A further call was received at around 1.30am on Thursday, September 18 when a small plastic shed had caught fire.
