a SPECIAL exhibition of paintings in Belper entitled ‘Earth Air Fire Water’ enthralled its visitors.

Artist Michael Cook had on show four large canvasses that each depicted striking images of the elements.

The exhibition was hosted at the Our Lady’s Catholic Church in the town and each of the paintings was inspired by quotations from the four gospel-writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Accompanying the art were written reflections by Ros O’Melia, of Belper. She said: “They are designed to draw out the sense of the sacred in the natural world which is characteristic of Michael’s work, in an English artistic tradition which began with William Blake.”
