THE efforts and bravery of unsung community heroes in Belper and the surrounding villages have been recognised at our New Year Honours 2012.
We presented six framed certificates on Wednesday, January 11, at the town’s Strutts Centre.
There were eight winners in all — although three were unable to attend the ceremony. One was ill, but sent someone along in her place.
All eight had been nominated for the accolade by News readers.
And they were all certainly worthy of being honoured.
Belper News Editor Julie Crouch, who presented the awards, said: “All of our 2012 winners are inspirational people.
“We have had readers send in long letters about some of them, others phoned us anonymously feeling we should know about a particular person, then going on to tell us at length why they felt that person should get an award.
“All our winners have made huge differences to other people’s lives.
“All of them have made vital contributions to help others in and around the Belper area, or they have inspired us by their good deeds or sheer determination.
“They make us proud, and it is the Belper News’ privilege to award them with New Year Honours.”
Here, we take a look at each of our winners.
