Derbyshire Wildlife Trust (DWT) has launched an appeal to raise funds for a five year, £50,000 badger vaccination programme in the county.
Bovine TB is having a devastating impact on the cattle farming industry, with thousands of cattle destroyed in England every year. But DWT believes that other measures should be taken to tackle the problem, including installing barriers and electric fencing to keep badgers out.
Conservation Manager Tim Birch said: “Science has already proven that culling provokes disturbed behaviour in badgers, leading to movement between normally settled groups. This could make the bovine TB situation worse as badgers move from a cull zone and spread the disease to new areas.”
