Belper-born singer returns to town with choir

A TALENTED singer who was born in Belper is returning to her home town as part of a choir she co-founded.

Dawn Sherley-Dale (nee Oldknow) is returning to the town on May 19 alongside chamber choir Voxcetera to perform a cross-section of traditional and contemporary songs from around the British Isles.

The concert will take place at Christ Church, on Bridge Street, at 7.30pm.

Dawn moved to London in 1983 where she continued and developed her interest in choral singing.

In Autumn 2009, with conductor Jane Hopkins, she founded Voxcetera. It is a chamber choir of 12 to 16 hand-selected singers who between them have many years of musical experience, performing traditional and contemporary choral works, opera, film scores, television sound tracks and popular music.

As well as giving concerts in London, last year Voxcetera enjoyed their first tour abroad, performing in southern Germany to enthusiastic audiences. They also took part in the Festival of Britain celebrations at the South Bank Centre and have undertaken various studio recordings.

The concert will take the audience on a musical tour of the British Isles, including arrangements of folk favourites such as Loch Lomond and Danny Boy. Conductor Jane Hopkins said: “We’re excited to be coming to Belper.”

Tickets are £8 each, which includes a glass of wine, and are available on the door or by ringing 01773 882746. Children’s tickets are £5 each.
