A major international manufacturer which has its head office in Belper has been awarded £7 million funding by banking giant Santander.
The UK Carbon and Graphite Company (UKCG) has been given the cash to help the firm expand its operations in Europe and North and South America.
The firm’s directors are based at an office in Strutt Street, next to the Royal British Legion, where a total of 14 people are employed.
However, its production is carried out at two factories in Rotherham and it also has bases in Cleveland, Ohio, Chile, Mexico, Brazil and Austria.
Its main export is graphite electrodes, which are used in the melting down of steel for recycling.
Last year it supplied around 55 customers in 25 countries worldwide.
Keith McGhee, managing director at the company, said: “These are exciting times for the business as we increase our presence in key regions such as North and South America, as well as building on our local presence in the UK.
“Santander has been integral to our success, and we’re delighted to be working with the team.”
A total of 43 people are employed by the company. Founded and wholly owned by the McGhee family, UKCG in July 2014, it celebrated 12 years of trading and in 2011, won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the field of international trade.
The group has grown year-on-year, generating revenues of £23.8 million in the financial year ending June 2013.
Jon Bennett, relationship director, Santander Corporate & Commercial, said: “The management team at UKCG have a clear vision for the business.
“This is a true local success story, which has grown enormously internationally and I’m wholly confident that they will continue to succeed in this endeavour.
“I wish them every success for the future and I’m delighted that Santander has been part of such a winning team.”
The investment will also supportUKCGs presence in the UK, with the expansion and development of the Rotherham-based factories.
The company is also receiving support from the ‘Santander Passport’, a specialised service model aimed at Santander customers with high value international activity in countries where the Santander Group operates.
The service links clients to the Santander Group’s global network, but also helps make the export, import and overseas investment process ‘more accessible and effective’.
