A Belper woman is set to compete in the final of a national beauty contest on the road to competing in one of the world’s biggest pageant competitions, in Las Vegas.

Alexandra Jeffreys, 27, of Market Place, has made the final of Miss Universe Great Britain and competes for the opportunity to represent her country at the international final in Las Vegas.

Alex lives with her partner, Neil McCready who is the chef at the family-run Black Swan pub on Market Square.

Fashion designer Alex works for Sports Direct International and will go up against 40-plus women at the final in Cardiff on Saturday.

Also a businesswoman, go-getter Alex sells personalised products not available on the high street, but nothing compares to the kick of seeing people wear her clothes.

“It’s a great feeling when you see members of the public wearing something you’ve designed,” she said, adding that the pageant was all about empowering young women.

“Through the Not In Vain campaign, participants enjoy a journey of self-development and fundraising for good causes while enjoying the downright glamour and gorgeousness of the pageant.”

So as part of the competition, the art lover and graduate of Nottingham Trent University has held a charity quiz night at the pub and raised £340 for the pageant’s chosen charity, Strongbones, which helps children with bone diseases.

Alex added: “My friends and family have been extremely supportive, they’ve helped me every step of the way from shopping for gowns to helping organise charity events.

“I entered the competition for many reasons, but the main ones were to build my self confidence and belief in myself. It’s a fantastic learning experience and you get to learn a lot about yourself.

“Miss Universe is one of the biggest pageants in the world and I think it’s going to be a huge adventure as well as a lot of fun.”

Voting closes on June 25, text vote GB ALEX to 64343 (£1 per text).
