Belper's Fliss hoping to become the next Miss Earth
The environmental conscience and green-thinking of one Belper woman could lead her to success in a global beauty pageant with a difference
Fliss Hilton, of Pennine Place, has reached the British semi-finals of the Miss Earth competition, which aims to discover beauties who care about environmental causes.
The 26-year-old, who works for the NHS, is now urging people in Belper to vote for her to send her into the final of this ethical contest.
Fliss said: "I'm quite interested in conservation and recycling and making the most of what we've got. It really interests me because it's not all about saying 'look at me'.
"I think it has an impact because it gives a face to environmental issues. You get sent leaflets and posters, which is great, but I think this brings it to a younger audience."
The Miss Earth competition has been running since 2001. It is now in its tenth year. It is intended to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote tourist destinations around the world.
The winner of the competition wins money to invest in environmental projects of the choice, and becomes the face of a number of environmental charities, including Greenpeace.
Fliss said: "If I won I like the idea of supporting local causes. Areas like the River Gardens in Belper and other parks should be conserved so people can enjoy them. They need to stay green."
Fliss heard about the contest through a friend from stage school in Liverpool, who took part in the pageant a few years ago. It is the first time she has ever done anything like this.
She said: "I never expected to get this far. I thought I would enter and it would be a laugh, so I'm quite nervous now. I'm still enjoying it though."
Fliss needs as many votes as possible to get through to the next round of the competition. To vote for her text Fliss Hilton to 81118. Votes cost 1, which goes towards the winner's chosen project. The final will take place in September.
