Chemicals firm help to teach Guide dog Bailey new tricks

A VIP – very important pup – visited The Lubrizol Corporation in Belper to say thank you for setting it on a journey to becoming a guide dog.

Little Bailey is now five months old but has already learned many of the basic obedience commands that will be used when he goes out into the world as part of a Guide Dog partnership.

Although it was Bailey’s first visit, the staff at the company, on Nether Lane, Hazelwood have heard all about his progress over the last few months since they raised £5,000 to choose his name.

Sue Cook, of Lubrizol - which manufactures speciality chemicals - said: “It was really exciting to meet Bailey. It was also great to meet his puppy walker, Sandra Allison and to find out all about the training and what his personality is like.

“These little things bring us closer to the whole process and it’s fascinating. It was surprisingly easy and fun raising the money to sponsor Bailey, we organised a range of events from quiz nights to a family fun day.”.

Mandy Rafferty from Guide Dogs said: ‘Puppy visits are really special. People then get to see that all the time and effort they put into fundraising has borne fruit in the training of this dog. It makes it all worthwhile.’

It costs just under £50,000 to support a Guide Dog from birth to its retirement, aged about 10. Guide Dogs do not receive any Government funding. Guide Dogs promises to supply every guide dog owner with a dog for as long as they need one.

Some people may need six or seven dogs in their lifetime.
