Fibre optic rollout in Belper gets underway

BT has started preparations to roll out fibre optic broadband in the town.

The News told last week how Belper, along with Ambergate and Allestree Park, will benefit as part of a £2.5 billion commercial expansion of the technology across the UK.

Now, the communications giant has submitted planning applications to Amber Valley Borough Council to locate new cabinets at Belper Library and HSBC on King Street.

A letter to the council from BT’s agents, Wlkinson Helsby, said: “BT is in the process of undertaking a project to replace copper and improve broadband speeds within the UK. The cabinets are required for next generation broadband access.

“The minor infrastructure associated with this improvement will vastly improve the communication network for the residents and other stakeholders”

It is hoped the improvements will boost employment in Belper.
