Group move to boost town centre trade

A new venture set up to promote the town’s independent traders believes if every Belper resident spent £5 a week on the high street it would put almost £3 million a year into the local economy.

Totally Locally Belper, a campaign similar to others rolled out elsewhere in the country, supports local businesses and the unique charm of the community.

It is being co-ordinated by Transition Belper and 50 indepedent retailers and cafes have been invited to join.

Following a first meeting at St John’s Chapel the group now also has five ‘town champions’ who will be meeting in mid-February to start planning the launch of Totally Locally Belper.

The idea is that by supporting local businesses and helping make them more successful, they in turn would use other local firms and suppliers.

Meanwhile, Transition has also announced plans for Derbyshire’s first ever Youth Market, a pioneering event created to encourage young people to experience the world of business.

The event will feature stalls and social areas where young people can perform and entertain, provide refreshments and showcase their catering skills.

Kathy Fairweather, from Transition, said: “We aim to involve two distinct groups of young people who would like to use their skills to help us bring about a new generation of young entrepreneurs. Those who have exceptional organisational, business and marketing skills will be engaged to help organise the event. Others, who are creative or love to entertain, will showcase their talents by either selling their products or entertaining the visitors.

“We already have a number of students from the University of Derby involved in helping organise the day.

“If you know any young people aged 14-25 who would like to get involved, please spread the word.

“Also, we need funds to help us set this exciting project up, so if you would like to sponsor this event or make a contribution, please contact us. All sponsors will be gratefully acknowledged.”
