Major expansion plan for pottery tourist venue

A POPULAR tourist attraction in Denby has applied for a major expansion that would include a village-style development, an 80-bedroom hotel, pub and outdoor activity centre.

The Denby Pottery visitor revealed its ambitious plans after it submitted a planning application to Amber Valley Borough Council on Wednesday, February 1.

The plans would see the new development built alongside the existing retail and tourist facilities at the historic pottery on Derby Road.

It is believed that the proposal has the potential to create 600 new jobs.

The visitor centre currently employs 95 people and welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors per year.

Garry Biggs, managing director at Denby Pottery, said: “We believe that this development will be a real boost for Denby and Derbyshire as a whole.

“We remain committed to maintaining manufacturing at the historic home of Denby Pottery, and we believe this development will help secure the long-term future of the site.”

The development team is led by Derby-based architects Matthew Montague and London-based HRPS, which is the property arm of Denby’s investors, Valco Capital Partners.

Paul McGowan, chairman of Denby Holdings and a managing partner of Valco, said: “This is a great opportunity to both strengthen the existing visitor centre as a major tourist attraction and to build on the 200-year history of Denby Pottery at its home in Derbyshire.”
