PUBLIC toilets in Somercotes are due to close by the end of the month as a Community Toilet Scheme takes over.
Chapman and Chubb Solicitors, on Nottingham Road, and the Somerlea Centre, on Sherwood Street, will now be paid more than £700 a year by Amber Valley Borough Council to allow members of the public to use their facilities.
Meanwhile, Community Toilets at Subway, Belper, and the Genesis Centre, Alfreton, will open in March, and ones at Appletree Medical Centre, Duffield and CVS, Ripley, are due to open in April.
The council says that three businesses in Ripley, Heanor and Crich, have also expressed an interest in the scheme. The 14 sets of public toilets in Amber Valley cost around £50,000 to maintain each year – around £3,500 per toilet on average.
Some of the toilets are used as little as 30 times in a week with the more popular ones receiving around 160 visits.
