Chance to view the figure inspired by Belper character

A local character, so well-known that Derby China made little figurines of him, has found his way back to Belper in the ‘Enlightenment!’ exhibition.

Born sometime in the late nineteenth century, Joseph Houghton was well-known in Belper. He probably struggled with learning difficulties and stories tell of others taking advantage of his limitations. But George Benson Strutt had a soft spot for Joe and always found him some employment in the mill or around town.

A number of China figures survive, each painted in different colours, making them desirable collectors’ items and one is on show at the exhibition at North Mill, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday June 2.
