A COFFEE morning at a Belper chapel which had lead stolen from its roof in January has been declared a roaring success.
The Unitarian Chapel, on Field Row, which is off Green Lane, had £8,000 worth of lead taken in a raid by thieves.
So the coffee morning, which was the chapel’s first of 2011, was a welcome respite.
A spokeswoman for the church said: “It went well. Everyone who came had an enjoyable morning.
“Since the lead was stolen from the roof, it has been more important than ever for us to raise funds from events like this.”
The chapel is holding its next coffee morning on Saturday, March 5.
The spokeswoman said: “People can explore all parts of the chapel, including the Strutt burial chamber.
“We do also have some history boards for people to look at and find out more about the town of Belper.
“All are welcome to attend what should be a very enjoyable event.”
The lead theft, which happened in the early hours of Monday, January 17, was described as “despicable”.
