HISTORIC cast iron lamp columns will be disappearing from some of Belper’s streets in coming weeks – but people are being told ‘don’t panic – they will be back’.
Columns on Chevin View, Wellington Court, Field Row, Short Row, Joseph Street, George Street, William Street and Cluster Road are being removed for intensive repair work before Derbyshire County Council returns them to their original positions and repaints them.
The columns will be restored to look as they did originally, when they were gas-powered.
The work starts next Tuesday, November 1.
Because the lamp columns on Long Row are Grade II Listed, they will be restored on site, and one column removed five years ago will be refurbished and put back in place.
Paint samples have been taken so the new paint scheme for the columns will be as close as possible to the original colour.
Work starts on William Street and Short Row in early November.
Adrian Farmer, the Heritage Co-ordinator for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, has welcomed the work. He said: “Well done to Derbyshire County Council for carrying out this work. It will restore lost character to some of the most important historic streets in the World Heritage Site.”
