The NHS has released shocking figures about the number of physical assaults during the last year on its staff including those across Derbyshire.

Statistics have been compiled and validated by NHS Protect with data overseen by The Health and Social Care Information Centre from between 2013 and 2014.

The report revealed that nationally out of 266 health bodies there have been 68,683 assaults including cases where perpetrators did not know what they were doing or did not realise what they were doing was wrong.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital was recorded to have suffered 113 assaults among its 4,225 staff in the acute care sector.

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust was recorded to have suffered 244 assaults among 4,947 staff in the primary and community care sector.

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was recorded to have suffered 246 assaults among 2,423 staff in the mental health care sector.

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was recorded to have suffered 203 among 12,172 staff in the acute care sector.

East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust was recorded to have suffered 115 assaults among its 3,800 staff.

Out of all the health bodies nationally, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation was recorded to have suffered the most assaults with 3,335 among 6,464 staff.

However, an NHS Protect spokesman said: “Care should be taken when comparing assault figures as there are many factors which may influence a health body’s published figures.”

These factors include population, geographical setting, level of mental health provision, learning disability and elderly care services, changes in service provision, health body amalgamations and splits and the culture of reporting assaults.

Those who were recorded as suffering a low number of assaults included Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust with two assaults among 1,456 staff, Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust with nine assaults out of 3,157 staff, Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust with seven assaults among 1,020 staff, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation with two assaults among 2,500 staff and Wirral Community NHS Trust with two assaults among 1,380 staff.
