Discovery weekend to be most ambitious

THE third World Heritage Site Discovery Days weekend takes place this month and with more than 60 events booked there should be something for everyone.

This year is the most ambitious to date and features a selection of arts activities including dance, music, poetry and traditional crafts.

Adrian Farmer, the World Heritage Site co-ordinator, said: “We’ve been delighted at the amount of unique arts events planned for the Discovery Days this year – our volunteers work so hard to make these events successful, and I hope people will turn out and enjoy their efforts.

“Of course, there’s far more than just arts events, such as the Hands On History session for children at Strutt’s North Mill at 10.30am on the Saturday, and the horse-drawn boat on the canal, so there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes.”

The events will take place on Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21 when there will be entertainment both evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm with a celebration of water in the River Gardens with a procession of light-boxes and lanterns.

Ken Russell’s controversial 1968 film Women in Love will also be shown at King Street's Ritz Cinema, at 8.30pm both evenings. The movie features filming in Belper River Gardens and cemetery, and stars Belper-educated Alan Bates.

On the Saturday there will be a free guided walk around the Beth’s Poetry Trail setting out at 10am from River Gardens.

And Sunday the gardens host three performances by the Maids of the Mill, whose Doctor Who and the Daleks themed dance takes place at 10.45am, 11.30am and 12noon.

Adding to the fun on Saturday there will be Morris dancing in Milford’s Strutt Arms car park at 11.30am, the Hurt Arms car park at Ambergate from 1pm and Belper Market Place at 2.30pm.
