Forever Young at Nottingham Playhouse
THE UK premiere production of Forever Young may only just have finished at Nottingham Playhouse but it has already been booked for a re-run in 12 months' time.
The phrase "back by popular demand" is no empty clich for a show that has enjoyed a resounding welcome from both audiences and critics.
Set in an unusually theatrical retirement home, decades in the future, the song drama by Swiss/Swedish playwright and composer Erik Gedeon blends outrageous slapstick, poignant moments and an ingeniously reimagined string of pop hits into a slice of entertainment that has proved irresistible.
The Playhouse has decided to bring it back next year from February 3-19, with tickets already on sale.
Forever Young has already proved a smash hit in numerous German and Scandinavian theatres.
Any anxiety over whether its humour would translate into a British context was swiftly allayed when the first audiences saw the show and gave it the kind of reception more commonly seen with the Playhouse's celebrated pantomime.
Part of the show's effectiveness lies in a cast of familiar faces playing decrepit, decades-older versions of themselves.
The cast of the recently completed production included Playhouse panto stalwarts John Elkington and Rebecca Little.
As in the 2010 incarnation, next year's revival will contain gratuitous use of strong language for cheap comic effect and is recommended to audience members aged 14 and over.
