AS COLD weather begin to take a hold, Belper’s former mayor has issued a plea to people in the town not to steal grit.
Cllr John Nelson said he was dismayed last year as people took grit from bins around Belper for their own personal use.
“The grit bins are purely and simply for the highways,” said Cllr Nelson.
“I will prosecute them myself if I catch someone stealing it.
“The grit is for highways in the vicinity of the grit bin — not for people’s driveways.
“Last year we had a major problem with people stealing grit for personal use.
“I want to nip it in the bud before it starts again.”
The council has also cut its grit budget from £4,000 last year to £2,000 this year.
