Four nominated for a gong at our New Year’s honours awards

The first nominations have arrived for our New Year’s honours awards – and they are four people who have done great work in bringing the community together.

For the third year running we are inviting readers to single out unsung heroes i n the town who deserve special recognition.

Many people across the town work tirelessly for the benefit of others and we will be presenting our winners with certificates at a ceremony at the beginning of next year.

First to be put forward for a Belper News gong is JP Deacon who foundedthe Hackett’s Bar Social night for adults with learning disabilities.

The gatherings have been running on the third Wednesday each month for more than three years and include events such as discos and karaoke.

Peopletravel from Derby for the sessions, which receive no public funding.

JP’s mother, Sally Lemsford nominated him for the award and said her son – who works voluntarily – should receive an award for all the fantastic work he puts in.

Also put forward for an honour is Adrian Farmer, who was nominated by his wife Mary McLean Farmer.

Adrian fell in love with Belper in the 1990s and works tirelessly for the town on many local groups.

The World Heritage Site Co-ordinator created Discovery Days which has developed from a weekend celebration to an annual ten day festival attracting thousands of visitors.

He also recently developed a Belper Ambassadors scheme – training local traders to offer help, advice and local knowledge to visitors.

Julie Buckley, Home Librarian, who visits housebound people in Belper was put forward by Wyn Edwards.

Wyn said: “You look forward to her visit with special pleasure. Therefore I would like to reccommend her for a Hero Award as an unsung heroine. “

Finally, Kathy Fairweather has been put forward for the work she has done with the Transition Belper group by Ian Jackson.

She has led the adoption and improvements to the green spaces of Belper train station, which has been massively transformed by volunteers in recent months.
