Fruit machine gang target two Belper pubs

Publicans in Belper are being urged to be on their guard after a gang attempted to ransack fruit machines at a snooker club and a pub.

The first incident happened at 2.45pm on Monday, August 19 at the Jaxx Q Club on Days Lane.

Two men ordered drinks and the group then crowded around a fruit machine.

A barman told police he thought the gang were acting suspiciously and approached them. They left empty-handed.

He described them as speaking with Birmingham accents and said they were aged between 25 to 40.

At 3.25pm a group of men entered the Greyhound pub on Whitemoor Lane.

While one man asked the barmaid for directions, the others tried to break into the fruit machine using a crowbar.

But the landlord challenged them and the men again left empty-handed.

Although descriptions of the group vary, a white man with ginger hair and boss-eyes was allegedly in both bars.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said: “We believe the two incidents may be linked and we advise publicans to be on their guard.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Derbyshire Police on 101.
