Fun run man sets a £10k charity target

A FUN RUN and walk organiser is looking to supersede his own sterling efforts by raising more than £10,000 at a charity event – a target which is nearly twice as much as he raked in last year.

Keith Griffiths, of South Wingfield, has organised the Cromford event for the past two years and raised thousands for Leukaemia Research.

Last year the event attracted more than 200 people and pulled in £6,000.

But the 60-year-old is confident of attracting twice as many entries and trump last year’s fantastic cash tally, all for Arthritis Research UK.

Keith said: “This event is growing every year and it’s fast becoming the biggest event around here.

“We had over 200 people take part last year, and we are expecting double that this year.

“I was approached by the charity who asked if we could raise money for them. A lot of children are suffering from arthritis – people think it’s just for elderly people but it can affect anyone.

“I just wanted to raise money for charity and I thought we had all the facilities in Cromford, so I put it together.”

Starting at Cromford Wharf, entries have the choice of either walking or running the 15-mile circular route which heads through Cromford, Riber, Crich, Chase Woods and Ambergate before crossing the finishing line again at Cromford. Alternatively, a gentler two-mile canal stroll is planned.

With the event growing in popularity, Arthritis Research UK approached Keith about being the recipients of this year’s sponsorship money.

Regional fundraising manager for Arthritis Research UK, Emma Macdonald said: “We are delighted to be selected as the charity partner for the Cromford 15-mile walk/run and the two mile canal stroll.

“I would encourage anyone to come along and enjoy this amazing event and support our worthwhile cause.”

Planned for Sunday, May 13, people are being encouraged to grab a sponsorship form.

They can be obtained from Keith on 07977 501898 or email keith.arthritisresearch@w3z.co.uk

Alternatively, contact Emma Macdonald on 07772 111265 or email e.macdonald@arthritisresearchuk.org

Entry is £7.50 per adult, £3 for children 12 and under and £10 for a family ticket for two adults and two children.

Everyone who enters will receive either a free t-shirt or running vest, and a medal when they cross the finishing line.
