Grants will ensure ‘we maintain the legacy’ of Olympics

Belper’s MP has welcomed a grant of nearly £10,000 for a community group near the town.

Pauline Latham said she was “thrilled” Milford and Makeney Community Group has been presented with £9,900 in order to install new children’s equipment at a play area by the Big Lottery Fund.

The award comes after Choose Cycling in the Community, based in Belper, received £4,700 worth of lottery funding, to encourage older people to adopt healthy lifestyles as reported in the News.

The group will also use the cash to encourage people to follow the Olympic Torch Relay via the internet.

Meanwhile, Stanley and Stanley Common Parish Council has been awarded £8,000 to to improve equipment at a recreation ground.

Mrs Latham said: “I am thrilled these three local organisations have been awarded these grants, which they can use to promote an active way of life to people of all ages.

“It is so important that all people – young and old – stay active, and lead a healthy lifestyle.

“These grants will make a difference for many, many years, and will really ensure that we maintain the legacy of the Olympic Games this year.”

The Olympic torch will visit parts of Mid-Derbyshire this Friday (June 29).
