It has been estimated that £123,000 worth of unused prescriptions are ‘stockpiling’ in patients’ cabinets in Belper.
The study by NHS Derbyshire has also revealed that the figure for the county as a whole was £6 million.
To combat this, a ‘Hate Waste, Love your NHS’ appeal is being launched that urges patients to think carefully before they re-order medicines – as once they are dispensed they cannot be reused.
Kate Needham, head of medicines for NHS Derbyshire County, said: “Wasted medicines means wasted money. What we’re doing is asking patients to think.”
