plans for town hall at belper: The News’ front page reported on plans for a town hall in Belper. The development, which would be at the junction of King Street and Green Lane, would come complete with a large hall for social functions and offices for local, county and national government. The project, deemed ambitious at the time, took shape at a meeting of the town’s urban council. The plan provided for a three-storey building facing King Street.

girl guide off to portugal: A 14-year-old Girl Guide from Kilburn was selected to represent Britain at an International Guide Camp. Alison Pinnington was chosen as one of six British representatives for the trip to central Portugal in the following July. To be chosen, Alison had to go through a gruelling day of interviews and tests. The John Flamstead School pupil would stay with a Portuguese guide and learn about the movement in that country.

awards for poster design: Children from Belper, Kilburn and Duffield swept the boards at a Tidy Shoppers colouring competition. The task was to design a poster to promote litter awareness, and judged artistic skills and use of materials. The winners were six-year-olds Katy Thomas and Alisha Powell, of Kilburn Infants School, and Martin Lenord, five, of William Gilbert School in Duffield. Sally Bestwick, Joseph David and Phillipa Nayer won runners-up prizes.
