A dedicated volunteer who has spearheaded the transformation of Belper Station’s gardens has been given an award by a train company.

Kathy Fairweather was presented with an Outstanding Volunteer Contribution Award by East Midlands Trains for her work on the project during a presentation evening in Derby.

In just over a year, Mrs Fairweather has co-ordinated the transformation of the neglected station environment into blooming wildlife friendly gardens.

She has led volunteer work, drawn-up planting designs and spent countless hours working at the station, in all weathers alongside other volunteers from Transition Belper.

Her award comes just two weeks after Belper station was runner up in Community Partnership category at East Midlands Trains Best Station awards.

Kathy was also honoured for her contribution at the Belper News New Year Honours earlier this year.

Kathy said: “I was very pleasantly surprised to be given this award. It’s really nice to be recognised for the work that has been done.

“I would also like to thank all the other volunteers who have supported me in this task.

“We feel that train stations are the first place that visitors to Belper often see and so it’s very important for it to look nice.

“We aim to continue on with this project and are looking for volunteers who can help.”

Kathy and Transition Belper worked in partnership with Derwent Valley Line Community Rail Partnership, East Midlands Trains, Network Rail, Belper Town Council and other local organisations on the project.

Andy Moore, Head of Stations for East Midlands Trains, said: “Kathy has made a huge difference in such a short time at Belper station, working with a dedicated team of adopters, Kathy has transformed the station gardens. Customers have certainly noticed the difference too with many comments about how well the gardens now appear.

“I have met Kathy several times and have always been impressed by her passion and dedication to the station and it was fantastic to be able to recognise her with the Station Adopters Outstanding Achievement Award for 2013 at our Station Adopters Conference.”
