ONE elderly gentleman had more reason than most to celebrate a new extension at a care home in Belper – because he laid the first bricks!
Retired builder Kenneth Compton is a resident at Ridgeway Care Home, on Crich Lane.
The home is undergoing a refurbishment programme, with the addition of a four-bedroom extension, complete with en-suite facilities.
And, having laid the first bricks, 72-year-old Kenneth, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, is outside every day offering to help workmen with the rest of the job.
Paul Spencer, manager of the care home, said: “He hasn’t forgotten how to do it and he knew exactly what he was doing.”
Ridgeway specialises in care for people suffering with dementia and encourages residents to remain as independent and active as possible.
